When bolted to the outside face of a pontoon, these pile  guides are the most common method of holding a dock to a piling. 

Crelive standard pile guides have been designed for mooring all type of wooden pontoons and steel pontoons. Every guide has a strong welded and hot-dip galvanized steel structure with low friction polyethylene wearing blocks or wooden fender.
